3D Printing of digital models into physical objects

3D Printing Process

3D Print Checklist

  • Without a CAD model, 3D printing is impossible – a CAD model must be created either by yourself or a 3rd party.
  • A drawing or photo, that can be printed on a4 paper, is not a 3D printable model.
  • 3D printing may not be viable for all things, in terms of time and cost – alternative technologies might be better suited.
  • FDM 3D printing has its limits – detail will decrease when items get to small.
  • FDM 3D printing is not for mass production, …. yet.
  • Nothing is printed once and it works or fits 100%.
  • Care must be taken with downloaded models, some might not be in milimeters but inches.

3D Printing (FDM)

  • Models you have designed yourself. (STEP format)
  • Downloaded object from the internet (.stl / STEP format).
  • Recreate and print old or broken parts.
  • Concept Models and Functional Prototypes.
  • Advice with model design and development for 3D printing.

What is 3D Printing

3D Printing is an additive manufacturing process that creates a physical object from a digital design.

There are different 3D printing technologies and materials you can print with, but all are based on the same principle:

“A digital model is turned into a solid three-dimensional physical object by adding material layer by layer.”

3D Print Technologies

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

THE MOST COMMON TECHNOLOGY FOR DESKTOP 3D PRINTING; – GREAT FOR QUICK AND LOW-COST PROTOTYPING.

Stereolithography & Digital Light Processing (SLA & DLP)

LIQUID RESIN SELECTIVELY CURED BY LIGHT; MOSTLY USED FOR HIGH-DETAIL PROTOTYPING, SCULPTURES AND JEWELRY.
